Insight: Battle for Damascus: frozen but bloody

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Rebel fighters in Damascus are disciplined, skilled and brave.

In a month on the frontline, I saw them defend a swathe of suburbs in the Syrian capital, mount complex mass attacks, manage logistics, treat their wounded - and die before my eyes.

But as constant, punishingly accurate, mortar, tank and sniper fire attested, President Bashar al-Assad's soldiers on the other side, often just a room or a grenade toss away, are also well drilled, courageous - and much better armed.

So while the troops were unable to dislodge brigades of the Free Syrian Army from devastated and depopulated neighborhoods just east of the city centre - and indeed made little effort to do so - there seems little immediate prospect of the rebels overrunning Assad's stronghold. The result is bloody stalemate.

I watched both sides mount assaults, some trying to gain just a house or two, others for bigger prizes, only to be forced back by sharpshooters, mortars or sprays of machinegun fire.

As in the ruins of Beirut, Sarajevo or Stalingrad, it is a sniper's war; men stalk their fellow man down telescopic sights, hunting a glimpse of flesh, an eyeball peering from a crack, use lures and decoys to draw their prey into giving themselves away.

Fighting is at such close quarters that on one occasion a rebel patrol stumbled into an army unit inside a building; hand grenades deafened us and shrapnel shredded plaster, a sudden clatter of Kalashnikov cartridges and bullets coming across the cramped space gave way in seconds to the groans of the wounded.

From January 14, having reached Damascus from Lebanon by way of undercover opposition networks, I spent four weeks in Ain Tarma, Mleha, Zamalka, Irbin and Harasta - rebel-held areas forming a wedge whose apex lies less than a mile to the east of the walled Old City, with its ancient mosques, churches and bazaars.

Once bustling suburbs are all but empty of life, bar the fighters; six months of combat, of shelling and occasional air strikes have broken open apartment blocks to the winter winds of the high Syrian plateau and choked the streets with rubble.

BARRICADES

Battling the cold in woollen ski-hats or chequered keffiyeh scarves, swathed in layers of cotton and leather jackets, a few thousand unshaven men, many from nearby peasant villages, some who deserted Assad's army, defend a patchwork of barricades and strongpoints, served by cars ferrying ammunition and rations and led by commanders using handheld radios and messenger runners.

Days are punctuated by regular halts for prayer in a conflict, now 23 months old, that has become increasingly one pitting Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, stiffened by Islamist radicals, against Alawites led by Assad; they have support from Iran, from whose Shi'ite Islam their faith is derived.

Typical of the frontline routine was an attack that a couple of dozen men of the brigade Tahrir al-Sham - roughly "Syrian Freedom" - mounted in Ain Tarma on January 30, aiming to take over or at least damage an army checkpoint further up the lane.

I photographed one two-man fire team crouch against a breeze-block garden wall, about 50 meters from their target.

In blue jeans, sneakers and muffled against a morning chill, their role was to wait for comrades to hit the army position with rocket-propelled grenades then rake the soldiers with their AK-47 automatic rifles as they were flushed out into the open.

There was little to make a sound in the abandoned streets. The attackers whispered to each other under their breath.

Then two shots rang out. One of the two riflemen, heavy set and balding, screamed in pain and collapsed back on the tarmac.

The day's assault was going wrong before it even started.

Another fighter crept over to help. Realizing the casualty was gravely hurt, two more came up and they dragged the man's inert bulk back across the street, through a narrow gap to relative safety.

Battlefield first-aid is helpless in the face of single shot to the belly. The man died in minutes, his gut ripped through and his blood warming the bare concrete floor. But there was no time to mourn - the army was alerted to the squad's presence.

As the rebels regrouped, a tank shell struck the deserted building, sending shattered concrete and dust raining down on us and the survivors ran for cover, ready to fight another day.

MASS ATTACK

Having captured large areas last July before the front lines again congealed in the capital, the rebels stepped up attacks last month, trying to weaken Assad's grip on the outlying neighborhoods surrounding the fortified centre of Damascus and pushing across the main ring road in the neighborhood of Jobar.

Among the boldest offensive moves I saw was an assault by what appeared to be several hundred fighters on a sprawling army barracks in the Irbin district. It was striking for the level of coordination it displayed among numerous units which, lacking uniforms, donned bandannas in bright pinks, reds and oranges to identify their loyalties and reduce the risk of "friendly fire".

One group also brought up a Soviet-built T-72 tank to take part in the February 3 attack. Crewed by men who evidently had been trained in the army, it may have had little ammunition, however.

The infantry skirmish for control of the barracks involved teams of fighters, their colorful headscarves at odds with grim faces and attempts at camouflage, stealing up to a two-meter perimeter wall that stretched for hundreds of meters around.

On a misty morning, they tried to maintain surprise, but once the shooting began there was no turning back, no sign these men might recently have been fearful civilians. They poured sustained rifle fire through gaps in the wall, tossed grenades over it and did what they could to avoid incoming rounds.

One man poked the head of a store-window manikin, fixed on a pole, into a hole in the perimeter, hoping a sniper could be tempted to betray his position. It was a wise precaution. I saw another man picked off later as he aimed through a similar gap.

By afternoon, helped by their tank, they had breached the defenses and were inside the compound, looking for enemies, intelligence and, especially, more weapons to carry off. They knew the position itself would be hard to hold - too big and open and vulnerable to familiar retaliatory air strikes.

In the end, at dusk, they pulled back. One commander said 150 of the attackers had been wounded and 20 were killed, a toll to add to the 70,000 the U.N. estimates have died in this war.

REBEL WEAPONRY

The bulk of the rebel armory is made up of Soviet- and Chinese-made AK-47s, similar to those among Assad's troops. Most rebels have one, though not always many magazines of bullets. I also saw U.S.-made M4 carbines and Austrian Steyr assault rifles not commonly supplied to the Syrian government. Western-allied Sunni Arab leaders in the Gulf have been arming the fighters.

Snipers use Russian Dragunovs and I also saw an American Barrett, a heavy-caliber rifle capable of puncturing metal.

The rebels also have rocket-propelled grenades and some heavier anti-tank weapons - at least enough to discourage their opponents from trying to roll their armor through their lines.

One day, I watched a man fire an antiquated, probably 1960s vintage, Soviet B-10 recoilless rifle, a heavy, bazooka-style cannon normally mounted on a little trolley and weighing about 70 kg (150 pounds); the rebel fighter simply hefted it onto his shoulder and blasted a heavy round somewhere down the road.

Capable of improvising, I also saw men use a shotgun to blast a fuse-lit, home-made grenade at their enemy.

Further from the fighting lines, some vestiges of ordinary life goes on for those civilians who have not joined the army of refugees. Often without electricity or running water, residents try to survive; a few shops sell vegetables, or meat kebabs. Moving around, glimpses of normality can be startling, as I found, turning a corner to find children playing in the street.

Other surprises were less pleasant. One Saturday, January 26, I was following a rebel patrol in Mleha, crawling from house to house through holes smashed in walls to evade the snipers.

Just ahead, those in front emerged to find themselves face to face with some equally astonished soldiers. Gunfire, grenades and screams followed. I threw myself to the ground. Both sides quickly pulled back, the wounded gasping and dragged to safety.

The battle for Damascus grinds on.

Apple's new iPad ads: No Samsung jokes (well, maybe one)

Nothing shallow here.

(Credit: Apple Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

If you're sitting at Apple HQ, you must be very aware of Samsung.

There must be such a temptation to offer a public swat or two at the fly that has cleverly positioned itself as the challenger to your own emotional supremacy.

Yet, with two new iPad ads that Apple has just released, Cupertino is stoically continuing to pretend that its tablet exists in a world all of its own.

Here, to vaguely jazzy music, we see words flash across the screen at lightning speeds. Not one of these words is "patent," "lawsuit" or "rip-off."

Instead, in one ad called "Alive," we see all sorts of educational and entertaining excitements. They are accompanied by words like "alive," "loud," and "surprise."

In the other, called "Together," we see, well, more or less the same. Here the words include "beautiful," "phenomenal," and "brilliant."

More Technically Incorrect

How odd to see Apple boast quite this much.

Apple simply wants you to understand -- as if you haven't grasped this already -- that it enjoys so many apps through its beautiful, phenomenal, and brilliant ecosystem.

It stands on its superior pedestal and doesn't deign to look down.

Still, I wasn't convinced that through two ads there wasn't one solitary jab at the competition.

So I slowed the words down to see whether a small, subliminal jest might have been inserted.

I think I may have found one. In the "Together" ad, there appears one solitary word that those who love Apple believe will always distinguish the brand from any other.

That word is "taste."

Nursing home chain settles with state over poor patient care ...

Hit with dozens of citations over poor patient care, a company that operates 20 nursing homes in Los Angeles County and elsewhere in California will increase its staffing levels under a settlement with the state attorney general?s office.

As part of the agreement, an independent monitor will ensure that Skilled Healthcare Group Inc. complies with state staffing laws, Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris?s office said Friday.

?This is a case about neglect and abuse of California?s elders by a facility that was supposed to protect and care for them,? Harris said in a statement. ?At a time when California?s elderly population is growing twice as fast as the general population, family and friends should have peace of mind that their loved ones are being well cared for when they are in a nursing home setting.?

Attempts to reach a Skilled Healthcare representative for comment were unsuccessful.

According to Harris? office, the state Department of Public Health issued 76 citations to the company?s nursing homes from 2008 to 2012. They alleged that patents had been subjected to conditions such as pressure ulcers, dehydration, malnutrition and over-medication, largely because of inadequate staffing.

The independent monitor will conduct surprise inspections and make reports to the attorney general?s office for two years. Skilled Healthcare will pay the $350,000 annual cost of the monitor.

In addition to Los Angeles, Skilled Healthcare and its subsidiaries operate homes in Fresno, Orange, Riverside and Santa Barbara counties, with a combined 2,360 beds.

How South Africa newspapers reacted to Oscar Pistorius' murder charge

Oscar Pistorius was perhaps the most famous athlete in South Africa thanks to his Olympic heroics. How did South Africa's press reconcile that with his arrest for murder on Thursday?

South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius was arrested on a charge that he murdered his girlfriend on Thursday. With a subject so beloved in his nation, how did the press cover? How do you even approach the story? I can't imagine, but here's how three newspapers in South Africa handled their Friday front pages, all via Newseum.

THE MERCURY, Durban

Pistorius_mercury_medium

That headline combo is crushing: "Oscar's Girlfriend Expected Day of Love."

THE CAPE TIMES, Cape Town

Capetimes_medium

The Cape Times includes a couple of photos of Oscar above the fold, and cuts right to the chase in the headline. This paper also dedicates more front page real estate to other topics and also nice watches and expensive liquor.

THE WITNESS, Pietermaritzburg

Witness_medium

The use of police tape style design over the photo of Pistorius being ushered off to court with the boldface questions everyone is asking ... definitely gets to the point.

Saturday's Letters: Opposing views on State of the Union

RUBIO?S RESPONSE

A drink of water

Who cares about Rubio?s parched lips? It?s his thirst for solutions that interests me!

David J. Gross, St. Johns

SUPPORTING TILTED KILT

It?s a choice

Regarding the letter from the reader who was offended by the Times-Union article about The Tilted Kilt: The outrage is misdirected.

No one has ordered these women to work at this pub; they made that choice on their own.

They are exploiting themselves and no doubt making good tips doing so. Honestly, I?ve seen girls and women flaunting more at the mall.

If scantily clad women offend you, go somewhere else.

In the meantime, find a group of truly exploited people who need your help. There are plenty out there.

Denise Tondreault Bizzaro, Ponte Vedra Beach

STATE OF UNION

Invest at home

In his State of the Union speech, President Barack Obama mostly separated domestic and foreign policy, perhaps understandably, but let?s connect some dots here.

The president mentioned the need to invest in our infrastructure, which is sorely needed, and which would also be a terrific job creator and economic stimulator. Specifically he noted there are 70,000 bridges needing repair.

Let?s get that done!

Some will say there?s no money for this, but of course there is. It?s just misappropriated right now in our bloated Pentagon budget, including useless, exorbitant Cold War weapons systems, maintaining more than 1,000 foreign military bases (many in countries that can defend themselves), inane plans for nuclear weapons ?modernization? and the $7 billion per month we continue to spend on a pointless war in Afghanistan, which the president says needs to continue for almost another two years.

Let?s bring our troops and war dollars home now! Put that money and maybe some of those troops to work rebuilding our bridges, roads and schools and creating green energy technology.

We need jobs and investment in community needs, not an endless war or bloated Pentagon budget.

Obama said that some in Congress want to protect the Pentagon from cuts by cutting even more from education, job training, Medicare and Social Security benefits.

The U.S. spends almost as much on the military as the rest of the world?s nations combined. Is that helping rebuild our economy and our communities or making us more secure? Surely we can make smarter investments with our tax dollars.

Mohammad Ilyas, Jacksonville

STATE OF THE UNION

Consider gas prices

How can the president or any politician say that the state of our union is in better shape? Obviously, he doesn?t buy gas or anything associated with it.

Everything associated with it includes food, utilities, transportation, clothing, hardware, software, heating, air conditioning, building supplies, automobiles, boats, health care, communications and the list goes on.

Has this president or Congress gone by a gas station to see what is happening to Main Street America?

At $1.70 per gallon when Barack Obama was elected and now at $3.70 per gallon, how can anyone think our state is better? Our dollar buys less now than ever before because of gas prices. We have smaller packaging with higher prices.

Energy independence is an oxymoron used in Washington that will not exist with current policies. The state of our union is in bad shape for all of America except politicians.

Mike Dallas, Jacksonville

CITY?S ATTITUDES

Repelling youth

Thank you for your lead letter, Billee Bussard! You expressed exactly what has been on my mind about young people leaving Jacksonville due to backward attitudes.

Last Monday my son and his girlfriend, 2008 graduates of Paxon School for Advanced Studies and recent graduates of Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida, left Jacksonville to establish a life in a more progressive, vibrant city.

It is unfortunate because they are exactly the intelligent, thoughtful, reasonable citizens this community needs.

Melody Shacter, Jacksonville

RELIGION AND YOUTH

Words from a believer

I found it interesting that only seven students were included in a front page color spread in the Times-Union on Thursday.

My experience has been that ?Under 30s? may be less interested in religion but are now more interested in spirituality and deep connections with both God and man than in my six decades of life. God cannot be contained by religion or threatened by questioning.

I also focus on the here and now, on humans, on ways to serve them and properly steward this good Earth we share for the few years of life here.

It is because I am a believer that I am inspired and enabled from the eternal to love, work and be connected to those in the here and now. I think we all want the best for this beautiful blue ball and every soul living on it.

It?s what our Father wants, too.

911 call in Texas prisoner attack: 'I've been stabbed in the neck!'

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

Moments after he says he was attacked by a prisoner who snapped his own eyeglasses to make a blade, a Florida police officer called 911, provided a description of the suspect and cried: ?I?ve been stabbed in the neck!?

The officer, Jaime Pardinas, was hospitalized after the assault but was expected to recover. Authorities released 911 records from the episode to NBCDFW.com and other media Wednesday.

Authorities say Alberto Morales, 41, stabbed the officer Monday night, when a second officer went into a Walmart outside Dallas to use the bathroom. Texas authorities have searched for him ever since.

The officers were taking Morales from Florida to Nevada to serve a prison sentence. They were supposed to fly all the way there but, after Morales acted erratically on the first leg of the flight, the three were not allowed to board the second leg, authorities said.

In the 911 call, the officer is out of breath but manages to gasp: ?I?ve been stabbed in the neck!? Through labored breath, he delivers a physical description and Morales? name to the dispatcher and describes him as schizophrenic.

The officer?s partner, having returned from inside the Walmart, later tells the dispatcher: ?My partner?s complaining he got stabbed in the back. He got stabbed in the neck.?

Miami police headed for Texas on Thursday to help in the search, NBCMiami.com reported.

Rare Sumatran tiger cub born at San Francisco zoo

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A Sumatran tiger gave birth to an apparently healthy cub at the San Francisco Zoo over the weekend in a rare boost to the critically endangered subspecies, zookeepers said on Thursday.

There are estimated to be as few as 400 Sumatran tigers in the wild, and zookeepers were monitoring the pair in the zoo's secluded Lion House via webcam to allow the 9-year-old mother, named Leanne, and baby to bond with little human interference.

"All signs seem to be positive so far," said Corinne MacDonald, San Francisco Zoo curator of carnivores and primates.

"Mom and cub are bonding," she said, adding the cub appeared to be healthy and was active and eating a lot.

The unnamed cub was the first tiger born at the San Francisco Zoo since 2008, when Leanne delivered a litter of three males. The cubs were transferred to zoos across the United States. Before 2008, the zoo had not had a tiger birth in 30 years.

Zoo staff will not know the gender of the newborn until its first examination at least two weeks from now.

"These births are definitely rare," said Dr. Tara Harris, a tiger specialist with the North American accrediting group Association of Zoos and Aquariums. About 75 Sumatran tigers are in captivity in North America and give birth to two to four litters a year, she added.

The cub, which will stay at the zoo for a year and a half before zookeepers decide whether to transfer it, was fathered by a 6-year-old tiger named Larry, who was temporarily transferred from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans for breeding.

Leanne was one of a handful of tigers worldwide to receive prenatal sonograms and exams while awake. Captive tigers are generally put under during the pregnancy exams, which can be dangerous to the mammals.

"It's so much better for these animals not to have to be sedated. Many animals have adverse reactions to the anesthesia, which can be worse than the actual procedure," MacDonald said.

In the wild, Sumatran tigers - the smallest of six tiger subspecies - are found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in lowland and mountain forests. Habitat destruction and poaching are the main reasons for the tigers' endangerment.

Silver Wheaton: Interesting Business Model | Gold Silver Worlds

Founded in 2004, Silver Wheaton (SLW) is what is known as a metals streaming company.? SLW is listed on both the New York and Toronto Stock Exchanges.? Essentially, SLW purchases by-product silver and gold production from mining companies (base metal and gold companies), in exchange for:

  • an upfront cash payment and in some cases SLW warrants or other consideration; and,
  • a contracted delivered price per ounce of silver and gold settled at the time of the of the initial transaction.

Until a week ago SLW largely was a ?silver streamer? and received a comparatively small ?gold stream? from its mining and development stage partners.

That silver/gold streaming mix changed on February 5 when SLW announced the acquisition (subject to final approval by Vale?s Board) of:

  • a 70% share of Vale?s gold production from its Sudbury, Ontario mines for 20 years.? The principal output of those mines is nickel; and,
  • a 25% share of Vale?s gold production from its Salobo mine in Brazil for the life of the mine.? The Salobo mine?s principal output is copper.

SLW now has 15 ?partners? who collectively operate 19 mines and four development stage projects in ten countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Greece, Mexico, Portugal, Peru, Sweden and the United States).

SLW?s Vale acquisition cost is U.S.$1.9 billion, 10 million SLW 10 year term warrants with a U.S.$65 strike price, and subject to inflation adjustments for Salobo, U.S.$400 per ounce of gold delivered by Vale to SLW over the term of the contracts.

I had the opportunity last week to speak with Randy Smallwood, CEO and President of SLW with respect to the Vale transaction.? The transaction is without question material (i.e. significant) to SLW.? In summary, Mr. Smallwood told me that:

  • SLW?s Board and Management believe that both gold and silver prices will trend upward from current levels as fiat currencies devalue;
  • the SLW Board and Management is cognizant of the current apparent attitude of financial markets participants toward precious metals exploration, development and producer mining company valuations.? They see that as presenting further opportunities for SLW;
  • irrespective of what SLW?s Board and Management themselves think gold and silver ?base prices? to be, at any given point in time SLW bases its business acquisition decisions on what they believe to be the then financial analyst price consensus for each of those two metals.? Today, SLW believes those consensus prices are U.S.$1,325 and U.S.$24 for gold and silver respectively;
  • SLW believes there is significant potential upside in the number of ounces of gold that will be delivered to it from both the Sudbury mines and Salobo.? This is because the Sudbury mines have, according to Mr. Smallwood, a long history of overachieving their stated production forecasts, and because SLW believes subsequent exploration and development at Salobo will result in escalated production from that mine going forward;
  • SLW had about $550 million cash on hand and virtually no debt at September 30, 2012, its last reported quarter end;
  • with respect to the financing of the Vale acquisition, Mr. Smallwood confirmed that SLW had arranged a $2.5 billion bank facility at an annual interest rate of 2%; and,
  • going forward, when questioned about strategy and metal preference, Mr. Smallwood said that SLW is ?a little more bullish? on silver because of its demand/supply dynamics, but that SLW would look to do further silver and gold streaming transactions that meet its acquisition criteria.

I am a shareholder in SLW, and like this transaction and the direction it is taking the company.? This is because I find gold somewhat easier to analyze and hence for me more predictable than I find silver, and as a result of this transaction SLW?s gold/silver weighting has changed in favour of gold.

As for SLW viewed overall, once one takes the time to review its business model, that business model is comparatively easy to understand.? SLW can be said to be a different form of royalties company.? In essence, what SLW does is:

  • provide up-front financing for its mining ?partners? in exchange for subsequent by-product delivery at ?much below? the metal prices that prevail at the date the streaming transaction closes;
  • takes the risk or the reward over the long-term on the gold and silver commodity price; and,
