Georgia Highlands College has announced the appointment of the following fulltime faculty members and advising staff for the 2012-2013 academic year.
New tenure-track faculty:
Sam Baltzer, long-time staple of Northwest Georgia's music community and former Shorter University professor, is now professor of music and community arts liaison at GHC. Baltzer holds a Doctor of Music Education from Indiana University, a Master of Music Education from North Texas University and a Bachelor of Arts in music education from the University of Missouri. He is known throughout Northwest Georgia for the ensembles he has formed, including the Clock Tower Jazz Ensemble, Northwest Georgia Winds and the Chamber Players of the South. Baltzer will serve the Floyd and Marietta campuses.
Sean Callahan, assistant professor of psychology, comes to GHC from the University of Georgia, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology. He also holds a Master of Education in educational psychology from UGA and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of West Georgia. He has served in several research assistantships at Georgia, and has taught there, at Gainesville State College and Emory University. He will be working at the Marietta campus.
Cara Harrell, instructor of mathematics, is a doctoral candidate in higher education at Nova Southeastern University. She also has a Master of Education in secondary mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in education from Georgia Southwestern State University. She previously taught math at South Georgia Technical College and at two local high schools in South Georgia. Harrell will teach at the Floyd and Cartersville campuses.
Paul Kapitza, assistant professor of mathematics, earned his Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics from the University of Illinois, his Master of Arts in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Iowa State University. He has previously taught at Berry College, Illinois Wesleyan University, Eastern Illinois University and the University of Illinois. He has also authored two books: "Linear Optimization" (with M. Jeter) and "Dictionary of Classical and Theoretical Mathematics." Kapitza teaches in Cartersville.
Gretchen Kotz, instructor of mathematics, comes to GHC from Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, where she taught mathematics. She has also served as a research engineer at the Signature Technology lab at Georgia Institute of Technology. She earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and a Master of Electrical Engineering with a specialty in biomedical technology and instrumentation electromagnetics at Georgia Tech. Kotz teaches in Marietta.
Steve Stuglin, instructor of communication, is a doctoral candidate in public communication, rhetoric and politics at Georgia State University. He also holds a Master of Arts in communication studies and a Bachelor of Science in communication from Eastern Michigan University. He has made a number of public presentations on political subjects at a variety of professional conferences. He will serve the Douglasville and Marietta campuses.
Betsy Clark has been named reference and instruction librarian. ?She holds a Bachelor of Science in international studies from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Science in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh. ?Her library experience includes the?Duquesne University Library, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Medical Library and the Community College of Allegheny County Library. ?She will work in the library on the Cartersville campus.
Karen Bennedsen has accepted the position of reference and instruction /nursing information librarian. She holds an Associate of Science in animal health technology from Harcum Junior College of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; a Bachelor of Science in recreation program development from Georgia State University and a Master of Science in library and information science from the University of South Carolina. ?Her library experience includes Life University, Emory University's Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library and the Gwinnett County Public Library. ?She holds memberships in the Medical Library Association, Georgia Library Association, and the Academy of Health Information Professionals. ?She is headquartered at Cartersville.
At the Paulding campus, Mary Perry has become library associate. ?Mary holds an Associate of Science in library and information technology from Georgia Perimeter College, a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Master of Education in biology education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. ?Her library experience includes the Georgia Public Library Service and the Cobb County Regional Library System.

Faculty Returning to a Tenure-Track Position
Sarah Helper has moved from various positions as librarian, where she has served since 2002, to one as an instructional designer. She will help faculty members learn new digital protocols to engage students through technology. She holds a Master of Science in instructional design and technology from Georgia State University, a Master of Science in library and information science from Valdosta State University and a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Maryland. She works out of the Cartersville campus.
Camille Hernandez, who has been a lecturer in mathematics since 2010, has been named an instructor in the subject. She holds a Master of Science in applied statistics and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Kennesaw State University. She teaches in Cartersville.
Patty Moran, who has taught nursing as an adjunct faculty member and a fulltime lecturer since 2010, has been named instructor in nursing education. She holds both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of West Georgia. She teaches at the Health Sciences program at Heritage Hall.
Maryanne Sandberg, who was a lecturer in nursing education, is now an instructor. She is pursuing a Master of Science in nursing education with Western Governors University. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Phoenix. She teaches at Heritage Hall, Rome.
Patricia Vincent has been appointed assistant professor of nursing education. She has taught nursing at GHC for five years, but now will now be moving to the baccalaureate program. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Chatham University, a Master of Science in nursing from the University of South Alabama and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of North Florida. She serves the program at Heritage Hall, Rome.
GHC has also added three new lecturers: Allen Dutch, Haley Harrison and Billie Robinson.
Allen Dutch has taken the position of lecturer in communications. He earned a Master of Mass Communication and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Georgia. He comes to Georgia Highlands from Shorter University. He teaches at the Floyd and Marietta campuses.
Haley Harrison is a lecturer in nursing education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia (now Georgia Regents University). She has a background as a practicing nursing on a medical-surgical floor and in an emergency room. She teaches at Heritage Hall and at the WellStar facility in Marietta.
Billie Robinson also has been appointed as lecturer in nursing education. She is currently a doctoral candidate in health care services at Walden University in Baltimore, Maryland. She also holds a Master of Science in nursing from Walden and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. She has practiced her profession in a number of clinical settings, including Saint Joseph's Hospital, Virginia Mason Medical Center, the University of Alabama Hospital, and both Redmond Regional and Floyd Medical Centers. She is headquartered at Heritage Hall.
